Whether you want a simple, intimate ceremony or an elaborate, over-the-top celebration, planning a wedding isn’t easy. One major factor that must be decided on before the rest of the planning can commence is the wedding theme. The wedding theme sets the overall tone for your big day and is the guide from which all aesthetic decisions are made. With so many different trendy wedding theme ideas and styles to choose from, it’s common for couples to get hung up on this major hurdle early on.
But choosing a wedding theme doesn’t have to be hard, and can be a lot of fun! To help you with your search, we’ve compiled a 3-part guide of wedding theme ideas organized into three categories: classic, trendy, and creative. If you missed Part 1 where we discussed some classic wedding theme ideas, be sure to take a look!
To keep the inspiration going, here are some trendy wedding theme ideas you need to check out!
- Beach/tropical
- Fairytale
- Bohemian/whimsical
- Modern
- Nautical
- Natural/organic
1. Beach/tropical
Kicking off our list of trendy wedding theme ideas is the beach or tropical theme. Generally, the beachy location of a wedding will dictate a beach or tropical-themed wedding. However, don’t limit yourself! If you want to bring a beachy feel to a land-locked wedding, you can still pull off a gorgeous laid-back tropical or beach wedding theme, even indoors.
The key here is plenty of tropical-inspired plants, such as palm fronds, vibrant neon florals, and bright tropical centerpieces. Accents of mermaids, starfish, seashells, sandcastles, and lightweight netting all help to bring the beach to you. Oh, and a beachy signature cocktail, of course. (“Mai Tie-the-Knots,” anyone!?)
2. Fairytale
On your wedding day, you are supposed to feel like a princess. And the next option on our list of trendy wedding theme ideas will do just that. If you truly want to feel like a princess on your big day, consider a fairytale wedding theme!
This is also sometimes referred to as a “Cinderella wedding,” and with good reason. Many elements of a traditional formal wedding theme can be incorporated here, but make it magical with extra twinkle lights, rhinestones, an orchestra, a horse-drawn carriage, and anything that makes you and your guests feel like royalty within a fairytale. Add a few nods in your decor to some of your favorite fairytales, such as red roses, glass slippers, red apples, “genie” lamps, etc. And pepper some classic Disney songs into your playlist for some extra fairytale nostalgia. This wedding theme is extra special if you’re planning a trip to Disney World for your honeymoon!
3. Bohemian/whimsical
If you’re a carefree, whimsical couple and find some of the other trendy wedding theme ideas more uptight than your taste, consider a whimsical or bohemian wedding theme. A bohemian theme is eclectic, simple, and elegant. In your decor, incorporate quirky elements such as mismatched chairs, oriental rugs, hanging macrame, decorative pillows, bright color splashes, and floral arrangements that pop. And maybe even some streamers and multicolored balloons for a little extra whimsy.
4. Modern
A more sophisticated couple might be looking for some cleaner-looking trendy wedding theme ideas. If that’s you, your best bet is a modern style wedding. A modern wedding celebrates true minimalistic elegance and sophistication with minimal design, clean lines, sleek decor, and sharp geometric shapes. Either cool hues or a simple bold color scheme works well, along with monochromatic floral arrangements of single or minimal varieties.
If you go with a modern wedding theme, the backdrop of your wedding venue itself is highly important. So make sure you book a venue early on with a sophisticated, modern design that fits your modern wedding theme. Also, modern gives you the ability to add in other elements so you don’t have to choose just one!
5. Nautical
Trendy wedding theme ideas that represent something specific about you as a couple are a great way to go. If you’re a boating couple or really enjoy the seaside, a nautical wedding theme might be the perfect theme for you. Or if you’re simply having a seaside or lakeside ceremony, a nautical theme matches well with that, too. Decorate with lots of blue and white, making use of stripes where you can. Incorporate maritime elements such as sailboats, anchors, ropes, netting, shells, sand, and shipwheels to enhance the theme. Let the theme help dictate your catering with some of your favorite seafood dishes and appetizers, and a salty, seaworthy signature cocktail.
6. Natural/organic
Last on our list of trendy wedding theme ideas represents another form of minimalism with a natural or organic theme. This theme is good for adventurous couples who love the outdoors, those who are especially environmentally conscious, or couples who just have a simple, earthy style.
For a natural/organic wedding theme, simply bring nature inside to you. Instead of elaborate floral arrangements bursting with blooms, use more greenery, plants, trees, wildflowers, and wooden elements in your decor.
Although simple, when done right a natural/organic wedding can be extremely elegant. At the high-profile wedding of the now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Prince William and Kate Middleton), Kate stunned the world with the gorgeous simplicity of an aisle lined with lush trees and greenery instead of the standard opulent florals. And if it’s good enough for royalty, it’s good enough for us! (Although with a backdrop like Westminster Abbey, you can hardly go wrong.)
